The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
